The Archery Trade Association reported that there were 3.7 million bowhunters in America in 2021. Texas had 1,152,959 total hunters and the country’s highest number of deer hunters per state at 756,171. Twenty-two percent (or 166,358) of the deer hunters used a bow or crossbow. The archery hunters killed 11% of the total deer harvest. The total deer harvest was 827,930, and 447,972 of them were antlered bucks. Archery Only Season for whitetail-deer hunters in 252 of 254 counties in Texas begins on September 28 and runs through November 1, 2024, with General Season starting on November 2, 2024. Check for other Special Seasons, such as Early-/Late-Youth Only, Muzzleloader, and Special Late seasons on the TPWD website.
Key Points:
License and Endorsements: Make sure to purchase your hunting license and check if you need the Archery Only Season Endorsement for your county.
Hunting Location: By now, you should know where you’re going to hunt. If you don’t, here are some Great Options!
Gear Preparation: Last year’s gear and boots are cleaned, treated, and stored in a scent control bag.
Scent Control: With the Texas heat persisting through October, scent control is crucial. I like to wear thin shooting gloves to mitigate sweat/scent on my hands. If it was an issue last year, do something different this year!
Strike Before General Season Pressure: Fortunately, deer, hogs, and other game will be more relaxed, in the open, during daylight at the start of the season. A few years ago, I passed on a nice buck because he was putting on a show with the does and intimidating smaller bucks. I figured that I had plenty of time to get him since it was early season. However, after the General Season started and there was more pressure in the area, he disappeared for the season. So, think twice before you pass on a shooter buck during early season.
