Break the Mold: 10 Ideas to Elevate Your Hunting Season

Like any other activity, hunting can sometimes lose its novelty, even for the most passionate hunters. There are days in the woods that may not feel as special those when you see a buck that causes buck fever. To make this hunting season truly memorable, we encourage you to be intentional about adding new elements of meaning and excitement to your season. With that, here are 10 ideas to elevate your hunting season and keep the thrill alive.

1. Introduce the world of hunting to someone who’s never hunted before. Teach them about scent control, hunting the wind, shot placement, animal behavior, and any of the other myriad topics to improve chances for a successful hunt.

2. Hunt on a ranch with over 1,000 acres or in a free-range area without a feeder. Take the challenge up a notch or two and test your skills.

3. If you enjoy hunting off the ground and are comfortable with it, try a tree saddle or a hang-on treestand this season.

4. Rifle hunters: Swap out your bolt action for a lever action, or your lever action for a shotgun, or your shotgun for an AR platform rifle. Or maybe you want to try a new caliber.

5. Bowhunters: Expand your arsenal by hunting with a bow you’ve never used before, such as a compound bow, modern recurve bow, traditional bow, or crossbow. Broaden your skillset and hunting experience.

6. Family members: Hunt with a family member that you’ve never hunted with before. Invite a grandparent, parent, spouse, or one of your children. The memories will be invaluable.

7. Take a safari-style hunt (riding around looking for game in an ATV, for example, and taking your shot from a distance) or combine it with a spot and stalk. This can be very rewarding with a skilled guide.

8. Harvest a different species this year. Outfitters on social media advertise various hunts, including cougar, alligator, exotics, small game, waterfowl, wild hogs, upland birds, and more.

9. Gift a hunt. If you have the means, consider blessing someone with a hunt. You may benefit as much or more than they do.

10. Hunt in another state. Texas is one of the best states in the country to hunt, but several other states boast big bucks as well.

If none of these ideas work for you, think about what does? What technique or weapon have you been curious to try? What species of game is still on your ‘To Hunt’ list? Determine how you can evolve as a hunter this season and go for it!
